A new YouGov survey of over 1800 people in the UK has found that only 6% are working the traditional working hours of 9am-5pm.
58% of those surveyed said they would like to start work earlier than 9am if it meant they could go home earlier. With 37% who work full time saying that they would most like to work between 8am and 4pm and 21% saying they would prefer to work from 7am to 3pm.
The survey also found that almost half of people worked flexibly with arrangements such as job sharing or compressed hours.
The topic of flexible working has been hotly debated for some time now with those in favour arguing that it improves mental health, productivity and overall engagement.
Employers are reminded that every employee with at least 26 weeks continuous service has the right to make a flexible working request. Only one request can be made in a 12-month period and an employer must deal with the request reasonably and can only reject it on the basis of eight prescribed business reasons.
